The Bar Council of India (BCI) passed a resolution urging the Supreme Court to leave the matter of same-sex marriage for "legislative consideration" by Parliament. The BCI argued that the issue was best dealt with by the legislature, which is "truly reflective of the will of the people." The BCI also stated that the vast majority of the country opposes same-sex marriage, and any decision in favor of the petitioners would go against the culture and social-religious structure of the country. The BCI further noted that if the Supreme Court showed any indulgence in the matter, it could destabilize the country's social structure. The BCI is a statutory body established to regulate legal practice and education. Currently, the Supreme Court is hearing petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriage.
