The Manipur chief minister has appealed for peace after ethnic violence in the state caused the death of around 60 people and the displacement of 23,000. The clashes were sparked by protests against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. The Centre has told the Supreme Court that the situation is gradually returning to normal, and no untoward incidents have been reported in the last two days. Special flights have been put on to help those stranded return home, and the court has called for relief and rehabilitation efforts to be stepped up.
